It is rare to have both the EHS/safety leadership and environmental permitting mix needed for this one...this is a Dir level role with E and S managers reporting to you.

Keys to success on this position:
1. You have managed both ENV and Safety managers for over 10 years.
2. You have relationships with regulators and are still hands on with your permitting skills; Title V renewals, NPDES in excess of 10M GPD, direct treatment using aerated or activated ponds.... (20-30M GPD preferred)
3. Paper/pulp experience, if not, your heavy industrial mfg experience includes a similar risk profile. 
4. You are a BBS expert and have been below a TRIR of 1 or have hit Zero with 500-2000 lives.

The Savannah Mill is currently seeking an Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS&S) Manager.  The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS&S) Manager is responsible for managing day-to-day and long term EHS&S activities for all mill operations, as well as ensuring the mill is aligned with corporate initiatives and priorities. Furthermore, the EHS&S manager interfaces directly with community leaders and regulatory agencies to represent the mill within the community and region. The EHS&S Manager is a member of the mill’s leadership team and reports to the Mill Manager. 
  • Ensure safe work practices complying with local, state and company standards are fully in place and enthusiastically supported
  • Lead in the development of Environmental Management System procedures for water, air, and solid and hazardous waste management
  • Manage all regulatory reporting requirements and permitting processes, including:
    • Air emissions standards and reporting for package boiler
    • Wastewater standards and reporting
    • Waste management standards and reporting
    • Storm water and Spill prevention programs
    • Environmental Training
    • Collection and analysis of environmental information to quantify and report environmental impacts and performances
    • Interpretation of environmental regulations, policies and company standards
    • Effective communication and implementation of environmental regulations and policies and company standards
    • Coordinating external resources
  • Actively promote a culture of engagement and respect
  • Lead/execute IP Global Manufacturing System (GMS) EH&S sub-element; help assure compliance with GMS expectations; flag system gaps for additional attention or resources.
  • Lead efforts to deliver safety targets for TIR and LWIR while implementing and tracking LIFE initiatives to achieve an injury free work place
  • Actively participate in capital planning and equipment installation to insure safety is considered in all plant equipment modifications and facility expansions.
  • Collaborate with Lead Team members and area leaders to improve the work place through development of improved procedures and following up on incidents
  • Regularly spend time in the manufacturing areas
  • Maintain positive and open relationships with hourly team members to understand concerns and work together on solutions
  • Respond to the mill on off hours for safety and environmental events and major mill breakdowns
  • Provide thorough root cause analysis of all EHS&S incidents
  • Demonstrate positive leadership for direct reports
  • Provide leadership and support to the mill’s safety and environmental leadership and area improvement teams
  • Lead efforts in the sustainment and continuous improvement of the mill’s Behavior Based Safety (BBS) program

  • Complete IP’s Safety Leadership Certification program
  • Work closely with local community leaders to present the mill as a good corporate citizen for safety and environmental stewardship
  • Instill safety as a core value within the mill team and effectively communicate a shared vision for safety
  • Develop thorough knowledge of mill equipment and systems quickly
  • Utilize excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate to groups and individuals at all levels
  • Ability to relate well to peer group and influence and support mill lead team to deliver on multiple obligations including those in the EHS&S area
  • Utilize strong organizational skills to handle multiple tasks effectively
Qualifications include:
  • B.S. degree in engineering (electrical, chemical or mechanical), environmental sciences or a related field
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations and how to apply
  • Minimum of 15 years of related experience in manufacturing and environmental areas; forest products industry preferred
  • Must have demonstrated track record of success in working in a team environment with focus on results, safety, and ability to solve problems
  • Working knowledge of OSHA and EPA regulations; expert knowledge preferred
