Position Scope:
The Pensacola Mill is a complex, fully integrated pulp and paper manufacturing facility with two machines, one producing lightweight liner and one producing fluff pulp.  The mill includes multiple process lines of wood handling, pulping, power and recovery, and effluent treatment.  The scope of the position includes managing day-to-day and long term activities for the mill’s Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), as well as providing environmental support for operational activities related to air regulatory compliance.    Additionally, the position has responsibility for supervising five (5) effluent treatment operating personnel, and the mill’s accredited NELAC regulatory laboratory and four (4) lab technicians.  The position works within the EHS&S group and reports to the EHS&S Manager.
Position Responsibilities:
The Environmental Engineer’s duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Ensuring that the mill is aligned with corporate initiatives and priorities
  • Interfacing directly with state regulatory agencies and community members to represent the mill within the community and region
  • Interacting with and providing regulatory guidance to mill operations, maintenance, and management personnel on a day-to-day basis 
  • Managing day-to-day WWTP activities and provide supervision to hourly team members
  • Working with WWTP operators and maintenance managers to prioritize maintenance work and communicate needs back through the maintenance organization
  • Managing NELAC laboratory and provide supervision to four hourly employees
  • Participating as a member of EHS&S department; maintaining strong relationships with other business unit personnel as well as operating and maintenance department leaders
  • Coordinating and communicating with operating departments regarding regulatory concerns/support, including periodic training for salaried and hourly teams on environmental compliance as needed
  • Working with mill engineering and operations to evaluate capital projects for potential permitting needs
  • Serving on a weekend duty team for the EHS&S group
  • Providing environmental outage coordination, both for routine and annual outages
  • Coordinating annual regulatory air compliance stack testing activities
  • Filling in for EHS manager when needed
  • Acting as owner’s representative for contractors providing services within EHS&S department
  • Providing visible and active leadership in delivering excellent safety results
  • Completing safety audits to ensure internal and external resources are complying with safe work practices
  • Reporting and communicating safety and performance measurements against objectives
  • Providing direct support for and participation in the mill’s structured cost reduction efforts/teams
  • Leading and delivering results through GMS based systems; assuring compliance with GMS expectations
  • Enforcing corrective actions to address problems
  • Participating and leading in the development of Environmental Management System procedures for water and air management
  • Actively using and improving upon existing systems for managing daily activities, including development of standard operating procedures (SOP)
  • Initiating and facilitating problem solving through trouble-cause-correction processes (TCC)
  • Understanding and promoting Manufacturing Excellence (ME) tools and processes; participating and leading ME improvement initiatives in the department
  • Supporting 5S program for the area and drive improvement projects, audit systems, and excellent results
  • Implementing systems to improve/sustain results
  • Providing support for budgeting cycle targeted at delivering year over year savings
  • Facilitating the implementation of new procedures and controls required by the change in facilities, products, and corporate policies and procedures

Required Experience:
Two (2) to five (5) years of related experience in manufacturing environment (pulp and paper industry experience preferred).  Environmental area experience is required and FLL management experience preferred.  Knowledge and experience with practical application of environmental regulations required.  Bachelor’s degree in engineering or environmental sciences required.  Must be experienced using a computer and skilled in word processing, spreadsheet programs (Microsoft Excel), SAP business systems, and other databases.  Plant Applications and PI ProcessBook experience preferred.  Position level may vary based on experience.
