Position is for a Senior Environmental Engineer with a major focus on waste water treatment. As a member of the mill’s team of environmental professionals, the individual will be called on to cover other aspects of environmental management but primary responsibilities include:
 
  • Responsible for day-to-day compliance and process control of the on-site landfill and wastewater treatment system (WTS)
  • Performing data analysis using PI and other programs in times of upset conditions and as requested by mill personnel
  • Working with lab technicians to gather daily field data, inspect wastewater microorganisms, and interpret lab results in order to make process changes to WTS as necessary
  • Overseeing and coordinating sample collection per NPDES wastewater permit (examples: nitrate/nitrite, AOX, chronic toxicity, dioxin, chlorophenolics, etc.), and data entry into internal database
  • Giving operational instructions to Technical Supervisor and Filter Plant Helpers regarding WTS
  • Working with Technical Supervisor and Power Maintenance team to identify and repair WTS and landfill equipment
  • Coordinating operations and maintenance activities for WTS such as chemical and lab supply inventory/ordering, sludge pond excavation projects, mowing, etc.
  • Developing and delivering annual regulatory training to certified wastewater operators
  • Various landfill operations/maintenance tasks such as sending waste samples for TCLP analysis, annual survey, annual mowing, leachate line cleaning and inspection, etc.
  • Annually review and update as necessary Environmental Lab Chemical Hygiene plan, Lab Standard Operating Procedures, Wastewater Treatment System Operation & Maintenance
  • Coordinating payment of annual regulatory fees (landfill, lab, wastewater, etc.)
  • Preparing regulatory reports such as monthly and quarterly DMRs, annual landfill report, and Greenhouse Gas Report
  • Participation on best practice teams in support of IP corporate sustainability goals
  • Assist the mill Environmental group with daily tasks and projects in multiple environmental media, as needed
  • Utilize Manufacturing Excellence tools such as 5S to maintain organization of Environmental Lab, file room, and storage areas
  • Maintaining and updating plans, procedures, and manuals in support of IP Global Manufacturing Systems (GMS) Performance Standards
  • Participating in Lower Cape Fear River Program and other community programs (Cape Fear River Watch, etc.) as needed
  • Providing guidance to departments mill-wide on DOT training requirements
  • Overseeing beneficial reuse programs and investigating beneficial reuse options for mill by-products
 
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of BS in engineering or appropriate technical discipline
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience (prefer 10 years or more)
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office and familiarity with or capability to quickly learn the use of PI, Proficy, and other computer applications as they are brought into use.
